KENNESAW, Ga. - Despite an impressive pitching performance by senior Lora Olson, the Indiana softball team dropped its Saturday evening game to St. Louis, 2-1.
Olson threw a complete game, giving up just two runs on seven hits and fanning six Billiken batters.
St. Louis struck first in the game, getting a run across in the top of the third on an RBI single by Elizabeth Everingham.
The Hoosiers (4-17) struck back in the fourth inning after Shannon Cawley reached base on a walk and moved to third following a sacrifice bunt by Mena Fulton and a groundout by Rachel O'Malley. Cawley then scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at 1-1.
Indiana threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Cawley was on second base with just one out. However, St. Louis second baseman Allie MacFarlane made a spectacular grab on a Rachel O'Malley lineout and doubled Cawley off on second to end the inning.
The Billikens (10-6) took advantage of MacFarlane's defensive gem by scoring the decisive run in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Hailey Weavers to score Brittany Durant.
Indiana put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the frame, however a groundout ended the game.
St. Louis pitcher Maddie Baalman picked up the win for the Billikens after tossing 6.0 innings, giving up just one run on four Indiana.
The Hoosiers wrap up play in the Owl Invitational tomorrow as they take on Eastern Illinois and Kennesaw State.
