BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers played their first home game since January 25 on Saturday afternoon, squaring off against the No. 5 UC Irvine Anteaters. Indiana’s slow start in the first quarter decided the game in the end, as the Hoosiers fell 10-6 to the Anteaters.
Freshman Kelly Matthews was the star player for the Hoosiers, as her two-goal effort provided a spark for Indiana’s offense. Shelby Taylor and Candyce Schroeder both contributed with one goal and one assist each. Callie McNaught and Ellie Stott added a goal each, both from long range.
The Hoosiers were caught flat-footed to start the game. UC Irvine scored three unanswered goals in the first quarter from the run of play, off of a power play, and on a five-meter shot. The Hoosiers had chances in the first eight, but weren’t able to bend or break UC Irvine’s swarming defense, and the Anteaters took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter.
UC Irvine kept their foot on the accelerator in the second quarter, firing another two goals in the back of the net to take a 5-0 lead. Down but not out, the Hoosiers were persistent on the attack and broke through in the closing minutes of the half. Matthews rifled a shot past UC Irvine’s keeper off of an assist by Schroeder with less than three minutes remaining in the half. The Anteaters countered quickly to maintain their five-goal differential, until the Hoosiers found a second goal in the half’s final minute. Taylor took advantage of a fast-break scramble play and tossed a shot into the back of an open net. The Hoosiers finished the half on a high note, but trailed UC Irvine 6-2.
While the first half lacked the back-and-forth play of a typical game between ranked teams, both teams came out swinging in the third quarter. UC Irvine took a 7-2 lead in the first 90 seconds of the half, but the Hoosiers showcased their mental toughness with a two-goal counterpunch. The first, a solo shot by Stott from 10 meters; the second, a five-meter shot from Schroeder. UC Irvine increased their lead to 8-4 with two minutes to go in the quarter, but the Hoosiers answered with their third goal of the quarter 30 seconds later. Callie McNaught’s goal came from an assist by Summer Creighton, and brought Indiana to an 8-5 deficit heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was laden with action, but UC Irvine pulled away in the waning minutes of the game. The Anteaters grabbed their ninth goal from long range with five minutes remaining, and their tenth goal off of a two-on-one fast break 30 seconds later. Matthews grabbed her second goal of the day to make it a four-goal deficit, but time wasn’t on the Hoosiers’ side. The game ended 10-6 in favor of the Anteaters.
The Hoosiers (6-7) open their 2015 conference schedule against the Hartwick Hawks on Saturday, March 7 at 7:00 pm. They will wrap up their weekend slate with a non-conference game against rival Michigan on Sunday, March 8 at 11:30 am
