BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Hoosiers opened their 2015 conference schedule on Saturday evening with a home match against Hartwick, their second game of the 2015 Fluid Five tournament. The Hoosiers, led by an astounding four-goal performance from freshman Kelly Matthews, won 15-9 over the visiting Hawks in a high-scoring affair.
Matthews led the Hoosiers with four goals and an assist in the game, bringing her total to six goals in her last two appearances. Candyce Schroeder and Colleen McNaught join Matthews as the Hoosiers’ hat trick-scorers in the contest. Ellie Stott and Jennifer Beadle added two goals apiece, followed by Sarah Young with a goal of her own. Matthews, McNaught, Shelby Taylor, Summer Creighton, Jordan Elwood, and Sarah Myers were each credited with an assist. Keeper Mary Campbell had a strong day in the cage, recording seven saves and leading a strong defensive effort from Indiana.
The first quarter was a high-flying affair for the Hoosiers. Indiana notched their first goal of the game in the first 20 seconds, a strong take by Schroeder with the assist from chance-creator McNaught. The Hoosiers followed that goal with an outstanding showcase of high-pressure defense and sharp counter-attacking. Hartwick scored against the run of play to even the total at 1-1, a goal that opened the floodgates for four more goals in the final two minutes of the quarter. Matthews grabbed a power play goal to give Indiana the lead. A minute later, Matthews assisted on a goal from distance by McNaught. Hartwick countered with their second goal on their next play, which prompted Indiana to net their fourth goal of the quarter on their next play. Matthews grabbed her second goal of the game from a Myers assist to take a 4-2 lead to close the quarter.
The second quarter was almost a duplicate of the first in regards to scoring. Beadle got on the board with a solo strike 30 seconds into the quarter, and Matthews followed a minute later with her third goal of the game. Hartwick scored on a five-meter shot to make the score 6-3, but McNaught and the Hoosiers restored the margin soon after. McNaught scored two back-to-back goals within the next minute of play--the first off of an assist by Creighton; the second, a long-range screamer as the shot clock expired. Hartwick closed the half by scoring a goal with 14 seconds remaining, but the Hoosiers took an 8-4 lead into halftime.
The Hoosiers started the third quarter with a bit of a scare. Hartwick struck first to make the score 8-5, proving that they wouldn’t go away quietly. Indiana responded with four unanswered goals throughout the quarter. Schroeder snagged her second goal of the game, followed closely by Matthews’ fourth goal to make it 10-5 in Indiana’s favor. Stott found two ways to beat the keeper near the end of the third quarter, lofting a couple chip shots into the net to increase Indiana’s lead to 12-5. But it was Hartwick again with the final goal of the quarter, a converted five-meter shot to make it 12-6 to end the third period.
Both sides continued to trade blows in the fourth quarter, starting with Schroeder’s third goal of the game off of a Taylor assist. Hartwick fired two goals in quick succession to cut Indiana’s lead to six. Minutes later, Beadle found the back of the net for the second time in the match, this time assisted by Elwood. Hartwick scored their final goal of the match with 90 seconds remaining, but Indiana had the last word. Young rattled Indiana’s 15th goal of the game into the back of the cage with a minute remaining. The Hoosiers took the match 15-9 for their first conference win of the 2015 season.
Indiana (7-7, 1-0) continues their season next weekend, when the Hoosiers head to San Diego State University for the Aztec Invite. The Hoosiers will face Whittier and Pacific on Saturday, March 14. They’ll close the weekend on Sunday, March 15 with games against host San Diego State and UC San Diego.
