KENNESAW, Ga. - The Indiana softball team dropped its final game of the Owl Invitational to tournament host Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon, 9-4.
The Owls (13-6) got on the board first with a three-run first inning that featured a two-RBI single by Hillary Kartman and a run scored on an Indiana fielding error.
Indiana (5-18) answered in the top of the second off a sacrifice fly by Rachel O'Malley to score Brianna Meyer, who led off the inning with a double. O'Malley recorded two RBI in the game, both of which were earned on sacrifices.
Kennesaw State added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on another huge at-bat by Kartman, this time a two-run home run to right-center field to make it 5-1. The Owls pushed their lead up to 8-1after a sacrifice fly and a two-run shot by Kara Chambers.
Freshman Taylor Uden responded by going yard on her second home run of the season, a solo shot that traveled down the left field line to make it 8-2.
After Kennesaw State plated their ninth run of the game on an RBI single by Taylor Denton, O'Malley brought in Kassi Farmer on a sacrifice fly and Rebecca Blitz hit a single to left to score Alyssa Rosati and cut the deficit to 9-4.
However, Owl pitcher Paige Mathews retired the Hoosiers in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
Up next, the Hoosiers are set to open play at Andy Mohr Field for the first time this season as they host the annual Hoosiers Classic next weekend in Bloomington.
