The Hoosiers, who won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 4-0 at the Snowbird Baseball Classic, recording season highs in total bases (24), hits (17), runs scored (16), RBI (16) and walks (8).
Jake Kelzer was spectacular in seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and tossing four strikeouts. Kelzer moved to 1-0 on the season, earning his second career win, in the most innings an IU pitcher has thrown this season.
Indiana was dominant throughout the game, chalking up its second-largest win and eighth double-digit victory in series history vs. Ball State. IU, which improved to 28-26 all-time vs. the Cardinals, topped BSU, 16-0, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in 1930.
A season-high 18 Hoosiers saw action and 14 of the 16 that stepped up to the plate registered hits, led by Ricky Alfonso, Craig Dedelow and Nick Ramos with two apiece.
Colby Stratten made his career debut for IU and cleared the bases with his lone at bat, tallying a team-high three RBI in the eighth inning. Dedelow's sacrifice fly in IU's next at bat drove Stratten home to complete the scoring for the Hoosiers. Alfonso's single opened IU's best inning and Chris Sujka smacked one to left field to score the lead-off hitter.
The Cardinals started their normal Friday pitcher, Scott Baker, who Indiana was able to score seven runs on in 3.2 innings via nine hits.
After Baker's exit, Austin Cangelosi smashed Indiana's lone home run of the game to open the fifth inning, when the Hoosiers scored four runs. Christopher Lowe, who hit the game-winning RBI in his first career at bat on Saturday vs. St. Joseph's, notched his second consecutive RBI single, pinch-hitting in the fifth.
Following consecutive walks, the bases were loaded for Indiana with zero outs and a 9-0 advantage. IU scored two more runs in the inning to make it 11-0 with Hartong (reached on fielder's choice) and Donley (ground out to second) picking up RBIs.
IU nearly notched its first shutout of the season before Ball State tacked on a run in the final inning.
