PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 16 Hoosiers improve to 3-0 on the weekend with a 12-7 win over No. 20 Harvard. Harvard pulled within one goal heading into half time, but Indiana finished the game on a 7-3 scoring run to take the win.
Kelly Matthews led eight Hoosiers on the scoreboard with four goals, bringing her weekend total to nine. Colleen McNaught was the only other Hoosier with multiple goals, as the Hoosiers showcased a diverse attack on Saturday afternoon.
Ellie Stott, Summer Creighton, Shelby Taylor Candyce Schroeder, Alexis Jones, and Rebecca Gerrity netted one goal each for Indiana. The Hoosiers have had at least seven players score one or more goals in all three games this weekend.
Gerrity led the Hoosiers with three assists, followed by Myers with two. McNaught, Taylor, Schroeder, and Jennifer Beadle were credited with one assist each. McNaught leads Indiana with 62 assists this season, averaging 2.3 assists per game.
IU keeper Mary Campbell had another strong defensive performance, recording six saves. Campbell now has 15 saves in two appearances this weekend. Elsewhere on defense, Shelby Taylor converted three crucial steals to keep IU in the lead down the stretch.
Harvard took an early 1-0 lead to start the first quarter, converting on a power play inside of the first two minutes. The Hoosiers responded with airtight defense and two unanswered goals by Gerrity and Matthews for a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
Indiana and Harvard exchanged goals in the second quarter, which featured a wild finish. With five seconds remaining in the half, Gerrity drew an ejection and sent IU on a brief power play. Schroeder found Creighton wide open on the reset for a 5-3 Indiana lead. With just seconds remaining in the half, Harvard launched a shot from the half line that lofted into the back of the net as time expired. Indiana held a 5-4 lead at half.
Gerrity found Taylor early in the third to give the Hoosiers a two-point lead. Matthews added to the lead with just over a minute remaining. Harvard snapped back with their fifth goal of the game for a 7-5 IU lead entering the final period.
Indiana launched to a 9-5 lead within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, thanks to goals by McNaught and Matthews. Harvard retaliated with a goal from the perimeter, but Schroeder answered with a magnificent score. With her back to the cage, Schroeder spun around and skipped her shot into the top corner, extending IU’s lead to 10-6. Indiana went two-for-one with goals from McNaught and Jones, and Campbell made a clinical save to help IU hold on for the win.
With that win, the Hoosiers improve to 13-0 all-time against the Crimson.
Indiana will close their 2015 regular season away schedule on Sunday, April 12, with a game against CWPA foe George Washington University. Following Sunday’s game, the Hoosiers will return to Bloomington for a four-game weekend to close the 2015 regular season.
