UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Behind a third-inning grand slam by sophomore CaraMia Tsirigos, the Indiana softball team picked up its second straight win at Penn State, 5-4.
Senior pitcher Lora Olson pitched 5.1 innings in the win, giving up just three earned runs in the outing. Miranda Tamayo picked up her second save of the season as she gave up only one hit in the final 1.2 innings of her relief appearance.
Junior Katelyn Conenna, who picked up two hits for the second straight game, led off the second inning with a double that bounced off the wall in right-center field. Next batter up, junior Michelle Huber put the Hoosiers (13-28, 4-7 B1G) on the board on an RBI single to left field.
The Nittany Lions (21-19, 4-7 B1G) looked to answer in the bottom of the frame as they put runners on the corners, but Olson forced a groundout to end the threat.
After a pair of two-out singles by junior Kelsey Dotson and Conenna, Huber walked to load the bags for Tsirigos, who belted her first career grand slam to right-center field. The grand slam is the fifth on the season for the Hoosiers, who have now hit 41 homers on the year.
Penn State got one back in the bottom of the third on an RBI fielder’s choice by Macy Jones to score Lexi Kneif. Following a walk to Alyssa VanDerveer to load the bases, the Hoosiers turned their second double play of the game to end the frame.
A two-out RBI single by Penn State’s VanDerveer brought in Shelby Miller in the fifth before the Nittany Lions made it a 5-4 game on a solo homer by Erin Pond and RBI double by Mollie Sorenson
However, Tamayo retired Penn State in order in the final frame to secure the victory for the Hoosiers.
Indiana and Penn State will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m., which will be broadcasted on BTN Plus.
