IU Ends Weekend with 6-1 Triumph Over Rutgers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women’s tennis team made it a perfect weekend as the No. 52 Hoosiers knocked off Rutgers at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts, 6-1.
Carolyn Chupa and Alecia Kauss teamed up at No. 1 doubles to get things started for Indiana (14-7, 5-4). The Hoosier duo dominated Mariam Zein and Chloe Lee of Rutgers (6-14, 0-11) in that match, 8-2. It was much of the same for IU’s Kim Schmider and Katie Klyczek in the No. 2 match as they cruised to an 8-1 win over Gina Li and Lindsay Balsamo to clinch the doubles point for Indiana.
Kauss followed her doubles victory with a singles triumph in the No. 2 match over RU’s Lindsey Kayati in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Indiana’s Stephanie Smith also won in straight sets in the No. 6 position over Lee Levy, 6-1, 6-4.
The clinching singles match was won by Klyczek. She won by a 6-4, 6-3 margin over Rutgers’ Li in the No. 1 match.
Shannon Murdy gave Indiana its fifth point of the afternoon as she downed Lee in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-0. IU’s Paula Gutierrez struggled in her first set vs. Balsamo, but it did not faze her as she rebounded to give the Hoosiers another singles win, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
IU has just two regular season matches remaining on the schedule. The first will take place at Wisconson on Friday, April 17 at 4 p.m. ET. Indiana will then host Minnesota on Sunday, April 19 at 11 a.m. for senior day.
