BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head women's basketball coach Teri Moren announced the addition of Tia Elbert to the team's roster on Tuesday. Elbert transfers to Indiana after spending her freshman season at Marquette.
"We are very excited to add Tia to our Hoosier family," Moren said. "She is a quick point guard who takes pride in her defense and will provide our team with some toughness. She has proven her ability at the collegiate level. Tia is a very hard worker who is going to use this next year to improve her game so that she will be able to help our team reach our high goals."
Elbert, a 5-7 guard from Oakdale, Minn., appeared in all 31 games for the Golden Eagles last season, making 23 starts while averaging 8.6 points, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per contest earning a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman team. She scored in double figures in 12 contests including a career-high 21 points at Wake Forest on Nov. 21, 2014.
Prior to Marquette, Elbert attended Tartan High School where she was a three-year captain on the basketball team and averaged 36.4 points per game during her senior season. She accumulated 3,501 points during her high school career for the seventh-highest point total in Minnesota girls' high school basketball history. She twice earned Pioneer Press First Team All-State honors (2013, 2014) and was honorable mention All-State in 2012.
Coming out of high school, Elbert was ranked 20th nationally among point guards in the 2014 recruiting class by the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. She was the No. 23-rated point guard by ESPN Hoopgurlz and was 24th for her position by ProspectsNation.com.
Elbert ranked as a top 100 player overall among 2014 high school seniors by ProspectsNation.com (No. 92), ESPN Hoopgurlz (No. 94), JumpOffPlus (No. 95) and Dan Olson's Collegiate Girls Basketball Report (No. 95).
Elbert will sit out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
