BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Katie Klyczek earned Big Ten Women's Tennis Co-Athlete of the Week honors from the conference office on Tuesday. Klyczek was instrumental in each of Indiana's victories last weekend over Maryland and Rutgers as she went a perfect 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play.
Each of Klyczek's victories was crucial to IU's success against the Terrapins and Scarlet Knights. Her doubles triumphs clinched the doubles point for IU in both matches as her singles wins secured the overall team victory on both days.
In doubles against Maryland, IU and UM each split the No. 1 and No. 3 matches as Klyczek and doubles partner Kim Schmider found themselves in a 6-3 deficit to Nataliya Bredikhina and Kirstina Hovsepyan in the No. 2 position. The Hoosier duo rallied, winning three-straight games to tie the pro set at 6-6 and then again at 7-7 to force a tiebreak.
During the tiebreaker, Klyczek and Schmider faced match point on a number of occasions before eventually pulling out the tiebreak win 12-10 to take the victory, 8-7, as well as the doubles point for Indiana. In singles, Klyczek's straight set triumph over Maryland's Ekaterina Tour in the No. 1 match clinched the team win for IU.
Against Rutgers, Klyczek and Schmider rolled in the No. 2 match to defeat Gina Li and Lindsay Balsamo, 8-1, to give Indiana the doubles point. Klyczek went on to win in straight sets again in the No. 1 singles match over Li of Rutgers, 6-4, 6-3, to earn another team win for the Hoosiers.
This is Klyczek's second career Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor (March 20, 2013) and the program's first since Carolyn Chupa earned the accolade on April 3, 2013.
