WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Goals from Femi Hollinger-Janzen, Tanner Thompson and Kyle Sparks propelled the Indiana men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Butler in a spring friendly Saturday night at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
Thompson earned the Hoosiers a corner kick in the ninth minute and his attempt made it clear into the mixer where a header attempt from Grant Lillard was wide right.
The Bulldogs had IU in its heels in the 20th minute with a shot off the crossbar and a rebound shot saved by goalkeeper Colin Webb. Butler was setting up its chances off a trio of corner kicks.
After that two-minute run from Butler it was all Indiana. Grant Lillard unleashed a shot from distance in the 24th minutes that deflected of Cory Thomas but was saved by Butler.
Thompson took a shot from the left that whizzed dangerously across the goalmouth before rolling out of play.
Against the run of play Butler took a 1-0 lead with 5:41 to play in the first half. The ball into the box was cleared by Derek Creviston but made its way back into play where Butler's #20 found it unmarked and hit it home to the lower right.
Hollinger-Janzen evened the score line with 40:45 to play with a perfectly placed strike into the upper right of the net. As the ball was played in the senior brought it down to his foot, turned and hit the shot to make it a 1-1 game.
Less than five minutes later Thompson gave Indiana a 2-1 lead with his second goal in as many games. The play started with a goalkeeping error by Butler as the keeper handled the ball outside of the box. With a free kick awarded to the Hoosiers, Thompson placed his shot around the wall and into the lower right for the score.
Sparks gave Indiana a 3-1 lead in the 65th minute as he beat the Butler goalkeeper who had come off his line. Thompson looked to add to his account in the 67th minute with a shot that required Butler's goalkeeper to making a leaping save to his right.
Tim Mehl came up from his right back spot with a shot in the 81st minute that was deflected wide for a corner kick. On the ensuing kick Mehl got his head on the ball but his angle was just wide right.
The Hoosiers conclude the 2015 spring season this Tuesday as they play host to the U-17 Mexican National Team at Armstrong Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ET and tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth and IU students. Tickets can be purchased in advance at IUHoosiers.com or at the IU Athletics Ticket Office in Assembly Hall.
