Hoosiers Fall in Regular Season Finale Against Michigan State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 43 Indiana men's tennis team came up short in their final match of the regular season with a 5-2 defeat against Michigan State on Sunday at the IU Tennis Center.
 
The Hoosiers finish the regular season with a 17-10 overall record and 6-5 mark in Big Ten play. They finish the regular season ranked fifth in the Big Ten and will open the Big Ten Tournament next week as the No. 5 seed and will play No. 12 Purdue in the first round.
 
"We just didn't match their intensity today," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "We have had a good season, but to accomplish the goals we want, we have to refocus and get ready for the Big Ten Tournament next week."
 
Michigan State gained early momentum by winning the doubles point with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles, followed by an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
 
Playing in his final match at home, senior Sven Lalic put the Hoosiers on the board with a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory.
 
Michigan State's Brett Forman beat junior Daniel Bednarczyk 6-0, 7-5, but freshman Raheel Manji came back from a 4-1 deficit in his opening set to take a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 singles position to even the overall match score 2-2.
 
After winning his opening set, junior Sam Monette dropped his match at No. 1 singles and Michigan State extended the lead to 3-2. In a very tight match sophomore Stefan Lugonjic lost a tiebreak in his second set to drop the match and give Michigan State the final point they needed for the victory.
 
Up next the Hoosiers will compete in the Big Ten Tournament, April 23-25 in Champaign, Ill. Official pairings and times for matches will be released early next week.
