BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 48 Indiana women's tennis team ended the regular season in fine fashion winning its fourth-straight match downing Minnesota on Sunday inside the IU Tennis Center, 6-1.
The win gives Indiana (16-7, 7-4) the No. 5 seed in this week's Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers will take on fourth-seeded Penn State on Friday, April 24. This year's conference tourney will be hosted by Northwestern in Evanson, Ill beginning on Thursday.
Against the Gophers (16-9, 6-5) on Sunday, IU clinched the doubles point to start as Carolyn Chupa and Alecia Kauss were victorious in the No. 1 match before Shannon Murdy and Stephanie Smith won at the No. 3 position.
Paula Gutierrez kept things rolling in singles as she downed Minnesota's Aria Lambert in the No. 4 match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Katie Klyczek of Indiana was dominant in her final home match of her career in the No. 1 spot as she gave up only two games in a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Tereza Brichacova.
The deciding match was earned by IU senior Shannon Murdy as she defeated UM's Jessika Mozia in the No. 3 match in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-4. Other Hoosiers picking up wins on the day were Carolyn Chupa (No. 6) and Stephanie Smith (No. 5).
"I'm really happy for the team, but especially our seniors," head coach Lin Loring said. "We won five of our last six Big Ten matches to finish 7-4. They are a wonderful group of young ladies and they deserved to finish their careers this way. The doubles was key. Minnesota has dominated us in doubles lately and we came out and started strong on every court. We took control early and stopped them every time they made a run at us. This was one of our best total team matches. We will go into the Big Tens with a lot of confidence."
The Hoosiers and Nittany Lions will get started at 11 a.m. ET on Friday in Evanston.
