LAST TIME OUT
Indiana headed to Champaign, Ill. over the weekend for the first road Big Ten series of the season. Due to cold weather on Friday, the Hoosiers and Illini faced off in a doubleheader on Saturday. Illinois took both games, despite a fierce comeback attempt by the Hoosiers in game two as they erased a 7-1 deficit to tie the game, before the Illini won on a walk-off RBI fielder's choice. Sunday was a slugfest with the teams combining for 34 runs off 31 hits with Illinois coming away with a 22-12 victory in five innings.
The Hoosiers traveled to Louisville on March 25 to face the Cardinals in a mid-week battle. A double by Katelyn Conenna scored Shannon Cawley to tie the game up at 1-1 in the second inning. However, Louisville responded with five unanswered runs to win the game, 6-1.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
In its first season in the Big Ten, Maryland is off to a 21-15 record, including 3-3 in conference play. Big Ten wins for the Terrapins including two at Iowa, including a 19-0 drubbing of the Hawkeyes. Maryland also picked up an 11-10 victory against Ohio State on March 27.
The Terps have eight players hitting above .300, six of which are regular starters. Four of those batters - Hannah Dewey (38), Erin Pronobis (38), Lindsey Schmeiser (40) and Corey Schwartz (41) - have accounted for 157 of the team's 304 hits on the year. Schwartz also leads the team in runs scored (36) and homers (11), while racking up 34 RBI, second only to Mandy Gardner. The Maryland pitching is led by Kaitlyn Schmeiser, who has made 19 starts and has accumulated a 15-6 record with 3.04 ERA. Schmeiser is also a force offensively, hitting .357 with 20 hits and nine runs.
This is only the second time in history that these two teams have faced off with the only meeting coming in the form of a 2-1 Maryland victory in 2003.
DOTSON'S BIG YEAR
Junior Kelsey Dotson has had a fast start to her season, hitting .330 with 32 hits - including nine homers and six doubles - 15 runs, 32 RBI and 18 walks. For comparison, through 36 games last season, Dotson was hitting .227 with 15 hits, six runs and 10 RBI. She finished the 2014 year with 30 hits (five homers and six doubles), 11 runs, 23 RBI and 13 walks.
Against Illinois, Dotson homered in every game of the series as her nine home runs on the year are tied for fifth in the Big Ten.
UTILIZING UDEN
Indiana freshman Taylor Uden had a productive weekend at Illinois, hitting .500 with five hits, three runs and nine RBI. The Glendale, Ariz. native hit a huge three-run homer during Indiana's comeback attempt on Saturday. In that game, which the Hoosiers eventually dropped on a walkoff fielder's choice, Uden recorded five total RBI, which is tied for third most in a single game in Indiana program history. On the year, Uden is hitting .283 with 28 hits, 22 runs, 16 RBI and a team-leading 19 walks.
CAWLEY COMING UP BIG
Senior Shannon Cawley also had a busy series against Illinois, going .545 with six hits, two runs, three RBI and two walks. In the series finale on Sunday Cawley went a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
The big weekend against the Illini extended her hitting streak to nine games as the senior has registered a base knock in 16 of the last 18 games.
Cawley, who sat out the 2014 season with an injury, hasn't missed a beat as she is second on the team in homers (7), doubles (7),RBI (27) and total bases (63).
#HOMERINGHOOSIERS
Indiana picked up four more home runs over the weekend, bringing their season count to 32, surpassing last season's total of 30 home runs.
Led by Dotson's nine long balls, 10 different Hoosiers have homered so far this year.
COMEBACK KIDS
Indiana made a pair of strong comeback attempts on Saturday against Illinois. In game one, the Hoosiers trailed 9-1 before scoring five unanswered before ultimately falling, 9-6. In game two, Indiana came back from a 7-1 deficit to tie the game at 8-8. For the season, Indiana has scored 35 runs in the sixth inning, more than any other frame. On the other side of the ball, Indiana's pitching and defense has shined in the late innings, with opponents scoring 24 runs in the sixth and 16 in the seventh inning, the lowest two totals of all seven innings.
The late surge also applies to the season, as the Hoosiers hit .318 with 149 hits - including 31 doubles and 15 homers - in the last 17 games. This is in comparison with the first 19 games of the season that saw Indiana hit .263 with 132 hits - including 19 doubles and 17 homers.
