INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Led by an even-par 72 from senior Elizabeth Tong, the Hoosiers are in eighth place after the first round of competition at the 2015 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis.
The Hoosiers posted a 301 in round one. Ohio State leads the field with a 281, followed by Northwestern (284), Michigan (291), Purdue (293) and Michigan State (293) in the top five of the 14-team tournament.
Tong's 72 is her best ever round in Big Ten Championship action. And up-and down front nine saw Tong match each of her three bogeys on four, five and eight with birdies on one, three and six. Tong made par on the final 10 holes and sits tied for 9th overall in the field.
Freshman Pear Siriko was unfazed in making her Big Ten debut, carding a 3-over 75 to sit tied for 29th. Siriko had a strong start to the round, tallying par on 13 of the first 14 holes. Siriko bogeyed in the par-4 15th hole but followed that up with a birdie on the par-5 16. The day ended with back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18.
Sophomore Ana Sanjuan is one stroke back of Siriko with a 76 and is tied for 41st. Sanjuan had two bogeys in the first six holes but countered with a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole and the par-5 seventh hole. A birdie on 10 put Sanjuan back to even for the round but the day closed with bogeys on four of the final six holes. Sanjuan's 76 is also a Big Ten Championship best for the sophomore.
Junior Camille Chevalier is tied for 52nd with a 78 in round one. Chevalier carded birdies on two, four and 12, but a bogey-bogey-double bogey-par finish moved Chevalier's score from +2 after 14 holes to +6.
Sophomore Theresa-Ann Jedra and senior Sarah Dusman are tied for 71st with matching rounds of 81. Jedra's rocky start leveled out as she made pars on six of the final seven holes. Dusman posted a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole to highlight her front nine and made par on six of the final nine holes of the day.
The Hoosiers are back in action starting at 7:30 a.m. ET off the first tee. Tee times have been moved up one hour from the original 8:30 a.m. scheduled start to due expected weather in the area Saturday.
