BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A grand slam from junior Michelle Huber was not enough to propel the Hoosiers to victory as they fell to the Spartans in game two of Friday's doubleheader, 9-8.
Indiana struck first as sophomore Erin Lehman scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the first frame to make it 1-0.
The Spartans answered in the second inning as Alyssa McBride knocked an RBI single followed by a two-RBI double from Lea Foerster to give Michigan State its first lead of the game.
After senior Shannon Cawley singled up the middle to score freshman Rebecca Blitz, sophomore CaraMia Tsirigos walked to loaded the bases and set the stage for Huber, whose first career bases-loaded knock gave the Hoosiers a 6-3 lead. The grand slam is the sixth on the season for Indiana.
Michigan State and Indiana both added a run in the fourth inning as Stephanie Sanders hit an RBI single for the Spartans and Lehman hit one for the Hoosiers to make it 7-4.
A sacrifice fly by Kassidy Kujawa, followed by a pair of RBI singles by Sanders and Jordan Davis, tied up the game in the sixth inning, 7-7, before a seventh-inning two-run shot by Kujawa gave the Spartans the lead.
Indiana threatened to make a comeback in the bottom of the inning as back-to-back one-out singles by Cawley and junior Kelsey Dotson put two on for Tsirigos, who hit a deep double off the center field wall to score Cawley and cut the deficit down to 9-8. However, the Hoosiers would get no closer as a pair of groundouts ended the game.
Indiana and Michigan State will wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Indiana seniorsLora Olson, Miranda Tamayo and Brianna Meyer will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
