PRINCETON, N.J. -The Indiana Hoosiers won their thrilling overtime CWPA Semifinal game against Michigan on Saturday afternoon, avenging their regular season overtime loss to the Wolverines. The match was tied at 8-8 at the end of regulation, and the lone overtime goal from Candyce Schroeder lifted Indiana to their second CWPA title game in as many seasons.
Schroeder and Kelly Matthews each netted a hat trick to lead the Hoosiers in scoring. Rebecca Gerrity grabbed two goals for Indiana, including the first of two goals that IU needed in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Colleen McNaughtscored a goal for the Hoosiers as well, an unassisted shot from range in the second quarter.
McNaught led the Hoosiers in assists with three, followed by Ellie Stott and Summer Creighton with one each. McNaught now has seven total assists through two games in the CWPA tournament.
Despite the trio of top offensive performances for the Hoosiers, Indiana keeper Mary Campbell was the player of the game due to her inspiring defensive effort between the pipes. Campbell recorded 10 saves in the game, many of which killed Michigan power plays and prevented the Wolverines from gaining an untimely scoring advantage. Campbell now has a total of 22 saves in this year's CWPA Tournament.
Michigan opened scoring in the first two minutes of the game off of a power play, but Indiana equalized on Schroeder's first of three goals. The Wolverines took their next trip down the pool for a score to take their second lead of the game. Gerrity quickly equalized the score for Indiana, and back-to-back goals from Schroeder and Matthews gave the Hoosiers a 4-2 lead over the Wolverines at the end of the first.
Michigan chipped away at Indiana's lead at the onset of the second quarter, winning the sprint and taking the ensuing possession for a score. Campbell followed that goal allowance with three saves in a row, two of which killed Michigan power plays. The Hoosier attack rewarded Campbell's efforts with two goals from Matthews and McNaught, respectively. Michigan's tenacious efforts on offense gave them another power play goal with seconds remaining in the half, but Indiana held their two-goal lead at halftime.
The Hoosiers came out flat on the attack to start the third quarter, which led to Indiana spending a significant amount of time on the defensive side of the pool. Michigan, on the other hand, was desperate to regain control of the game. The Wolverines dominated the quarter with three goals to Indiana's zero, giving Michigan a 7-6 lead heading into the final period of regulation.
Michigan's lead was fast fleeting, as McNaught found Gerrity for the equalizer in the first 45 seconds of the fourth. The teams went into gridlock on defense for four minutes before Michigan broke through with the 8-7 lead on the power play. A minute after Michigan took the lead, Gerrity drew a five-meter penalty for the Hoosiers, and Matthews sent the penalty shot into the back of the cage with aplomb. Indiana was able to hold off the remaining Wolverine attacks, but wasn't able to grab the game-winner in regulation. The two teams were tied at 8-8, and headed to overtime for the second time this season.
The Hoosiers weren't able to score at the start of overtime, but excelled in controlling possession and keeping the ball out of Wolverine hands. Indiana took the lead in the first overtime period, a power play goal by Schroeder via an assist by Creighton. Schroeder's overtime goal was her third of the match. In the end, it was the final word of the game, as Indiana took the win 9-8.
The Hoosiers won their first game against Michigan this season, a 9-8 non-conference victory in Bloomington on March 8. The Wolverines won their CWPA meeting, however, a 13-12 overtime match in Ann Arbor. Indiana's win over the Wolverines this afternoon not only sealed the series win over their conference rivals, but it also sealed Indiana's spot in the CWPA Championship game.
The Hoosiers advance to the CWPA Championship game for the second year in a row, where they will once again take on the Princeton Tigers. The Hoosiers have two wins over Princeton this season, both of which went to overtime and took place in Princeton University's DeNunzio Pool. A win over the Tigers this time around would mean their second consecutive CWPA Championship and a NCAA Championship berth.
The match on Sunday, April 26 begins at 3:00 pm ET at the DeNunzio Pool in Princeton, N.J. Follow the action on Twitter @IUWaterPolo.
