BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- One out away. That's what Indiana was from taking a 5-3 win and a dose of momentum to No. 20 Maryland this weekend.
But as things haven't gone as planned recently for the Hoosiers, neither did IU's final out in the top of what was supposed to be the final inning.
ISU's Landon Curry smashed a 2-run home run to tie the game, 5-5, in the ninth frame, ultimately forcing a 10th inning where Indiana State would steal a 6-5 win on Wednesday evening at Bart Kaufman Field.
Scott Donley and Nick Ramos each tallied three hits to lead Indiana, while Logan Sowers recorded two and Casey Rodrigue posted one.
Following a 43-minute first inning, where the teams combined for seven of the game's 11 runs and each made pitching changes, the game was largely uneventful leading up to the final two stanzas.
The Sycamores scored three runs in the top of the first, but Indiana responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a lead it would hold until the ninth.
ISU took a 1-0 lead and loaded the bases with just one out, quickly prompting a pitching change on the mound.
Senior RHP Luke Harrison, making his 83rd career appearance, gave up a 2-RBI single as the Sycamores built a 3-0 advantage. but was terrific for the remainder of his day, tossing five strikeouts and holding the Sycamores scoreless for 3.2 innings.
ISU walked Indiana's first three batters to load the bases in the bottom of the first, setting up runs batted in from Donley (single), Sowers (fielder's choice) and Ramos (single).
Will Nolden walked to load the bases again, before Isaiah Pasteur's groundout RBI gave IU a 4-3 lead.
Nolden's groundout RBI in the third gave IU a 5-3 lead and the Hoosiers were in the driver's seat for the next five frames.
