BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After falling behind 5-0 in the fourth inning, the Indiana softball team couldn't complete the comeback as the Hoosiers dropped game one to Maryland, 6-3.
Senior Shannon Cawley and junior Kassi Farmer each picked up a pair of hits in the contest, while junior Kelsey Dotson scored two of Indiana's three runs.
Maryland jumped on top early as the Terrapins plated two runs in the first inning off a two-RBI single by Shannon Bustillos. Another RBI single by Bustillo, followed by a base knock by Bridget Hawvermale extended the Maryland lead to 4-0 before an RBI triple by Corey Schwartz put the Terps up 5-0 in the top of the fourth.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Farmer up the middle to bring in Dotson.
Bustillo answered Dotson's run as she led off the fifth with a solo shot to left to put Maryland up, 6-1.
Next inning, Dotson went yard for the fourth straight game on a two-run homer to center to bring in Cawley and put the Hoosiers to within 6-3. Dotson's 10 long balls this season leads the team and ranks seventh in a single season in Indiana softball history.
However, the Hoosiers were unable to get any closer as Maryland pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser shut out Indiana in the final two innings to pick up the complete game victory.
