BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women’s tennis team, now ranked 52nd nationally, will host a pair of Big Ten foes this weekend. The Hoosiers will battle Maryland on Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. ET and then take on Rutgers on Sunday, April 12 at 10 a.m. Both matches will take place at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts.
IU (12-7, 3-4) split its two matches last weekend in Bloomington as the Hoosiers bested then-No. 43 Michigan State on April 4 before falling to then-No. 14 Michigan on April 5.
Indiana has only four regular season matches remaining, all against Big Ten opponents. Three of those matches will take place in Bloomington. With the expansion of the conference this year, only 10 conference teams will earn a spot in the 2015 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament which will be hosted at Northwestern.
The Hoosiers currently sit in ninth place in the conference standings. IU is just two matches back from sixth place, which would guarantee Indiana a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Teams seeded 7-10 will have to participate in a play-in match at the tourney in order to guarantee a spot in the final eight. So the next four matches are crucial if IU wants to avoid the play-in round.
Maryland (9-11, 2-7) is playing its third consecutive road match and is looking for its first Big Ten win since March 13. Rutgers (6-1, 0-9) is still in search of its first conference victory.
