Penn/Drake Relays Up Next for Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- As they have done many times this outdoor season the Indiana track and field team will send athletes to multiple events with the Penn Relays (April 23-25) and the Drake Relays (April 22-26) this week.
The Penn Relays will celebrate its 121st anniversary this year and will host nearly 22,000 athletes from over 60 different countries. The Drake Relays will celebrate its 105th anniversary will many elite athletes in the field.
Both the Penn Relays and Drake Relays have rich traditions and history and bring out multiple thousands of spectators to the events. The Penn Relays are held at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The Drake Relays are held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Hoosiers have 29 athletes traveling to the Penn Relays to participate in individual and relay events.
Among the individual events at the Penn Relays, Josh Roche and Brianna Johnson will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase. Roche currently has the 12th best time in the NCAA East Region. Johnson currently has the 48th best time in the NCAA East Region, but has not raced the distance in nearly a month and has since ran the sixth fastest time in school history in the 1,500m (4:22.48).
Nakel McClinton and Andrew Miller will look to improve on their marks in the hammer throw and Diquis Manley and Mackenzie Bollinger will compete in the 400m Hurdles.
The Hoosiers will participate in many relays including: 4X200m, 4X400m, 4X800m, 4Xmile, sprint medley and distance medley relays.
A smaller group of about 11 athletes will travel to the Drake Relays including: Ari Nelson (long jump), Jeremy Coughler (steeplechase) and Paul Galas (high jump).
IU alums Molly Beckwith-Ludlow (800m) and Derek Drouin (high jump) will compete at the Drake Relays as well. Last year Drouin jumped 2.40m to set a Canadian National Record at the Drake Relays.
