Hoosiers Earn Two Medals On Opening Day of Big Ten Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore Amanda Behnke and junior Sophie Gutermuth both earned silver medals on day one of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Michigan State.
In the women's pole vault, Gutermuth earned a spot on the podium in her third consecutive Big Ten Championship with a third-place finish and clearance of 4.17m (13'8.25"). Gutermuth currently holds the third best mark in the NCAA East Region at 4.35m, where she will compete next.
Behnke finished in second-place in the 10,000m run after staying with the lead pack for most the race. After Erin Finn from Michigan opened up a big lead on the field, Behnke made a strong move into second, where she finished in a time of 34:34.17.
In the multi-events a pair of Hoosiers find themselves in the top-five after the first day of competition.Michelle Adeniyi set season-best marks in all four events on the day and is in fifth-place with 3,105 points in the heptathlon. Her best point total came on a personal best in the 100m hurdles to start things off in 15.07 for 834 points. Adeniyi posted the second best mark in the field for the shot put.
Dylan Anderson, who finished in fourth-place in the heptathlon at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, is in fifth-place after the first day of the decathlon. Anderson started the competition with 852 points in the 100m dash in a time of 11.04.
Day two of the meet will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the decathlon 110m hurdles.
