BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- 20 members of the Indiana track and field team will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla., with the goal to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore.
The Hoosiers have 20 athletes that have qualified across 10 events and have two athletes that have declared in multiple events. Additionally, the Hoosiers have eight events in which they have multiple athletes qualified, including two in the top seven in the pole vault.
The meet, hosted by the University of North Florida will get underway the first two days with field events at 12:00 p.m. ET. On Thursday the 28th track events will start at 4:30 p.m. and the following day at 5:00 p.m. On the final day field events start at 1:30 p.m. and track events start at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:45 p.m.
Sophie Gutermuth, an indoor All-American is the top-ranked Hoosier as she is seeded third in the women's pole vault with a mark of 4.35m. Gutermuth finished in third-place at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Also in the pole vault, Terry Batemon the Big Ten Outdoor Champion comes in ranked seventh in the event with a mark of 5.36m.
The Hoosiers have two in the top-10 in the 10,000m run with senior Evan Esselink ranked sixth with a time of 28:55.98, which he ran at the Stanford Invitational to set the fifth fastest time in school history. Amanda Behnke will run the 10K as well and comes in ranked 10th with a time of 33:59.60, which she also ran at Stanford and is the sixth fastest time in program history.
Indiana has five entries in the throwing events by three different student-athletes, led by Nakel McClintonwith the 13th best mark in the hammer throw, with her school record of 60.81m, which she set at the Billy Hayes Invitational. Andrew Miller has the 24th ranked hammer throw at 64.13m and Dyrek Chowning has the 28th best mark in the discus with a throw of 55.40m.
Big Ten runner-up Rorey Hunter will race in the 1500m with the 16th best mark coming in at 3:43.70. Last year Hunter advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and made the final of the 1500m. In the 800m, the Hoosiers feature two athletes that have both run under 1:48 this season in freshman Daniel Kuhn(1:47.80) and sophomore Tre'tez Kinnaird (1:47.91). Kinnaird was the Big Ten Indoor Champion at 800m and Kuhn's time is the third fastest in school history, while Kinnaird holds the second fastest time in school history at 800m.
