Hoosiers Win 11 Events at Billy Hayes Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana track and field team won 11 events, highlighted by a school record in the hammer throw by Nakel McClinton at the Billy Hayes Invitational on Saturday.
On her final throw in the prelim, McClinton unleashed a throw at traveled 60.81m (199-6) to break her previous record of 59.66m. McClinton now ranks 12th on the NCAA East Region list.
"I'm pleased with the school record and I even missed a little bit on the finish, so I know there is a lot more in me. I'm excited to keep on working hard and improving this season."
In the men's hammer throw Dyrek Chowning improved on his personal best by over 10 feet to finish third with a mark of 58.65m. His teammate Andrew Miller finished second with a throw of 60.93m.
In the men's 800m sophomore Tre'tez Kinnaird and freshman Daniel Kuhn finished second and third in 1:47.91 and 1:48.52. The duo now holds the 10th and 12th best times in the NCAA East Region and the second and third best times in the Big Ten.
Brianna Johnson put herself in position to qualify for the NCAA East Prelims with a career-best to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:20.10. Johnson went from 55th on the region list to 27th with the sixth fastest time in school history for the event.
Senior Samantha Gwin ran a career-best to win the women's 800m run. Gwin sprinted down the final 100m and held off the second-place finisher by half a second to take the win in 2:08.20.
Ari Nelson set a season-best mark of 6.00m to win the long jump and Sophie Gutermuth cleared 4.22m to win the pole vault. Other field event winners included Richard Rouse Jr. in the long jump and Chowning in the discus.
Senior Sydney Anderson ran a personal best to win the 400m dash in 55.20 and Shawntanay Johnson took the top spot in the 100m dash in 11.90.
The Indiana men took the second and third spots in the men's 1500m. Rorey Hunter took second in 3:43.70 and Matthew Schwartzer finished right behind him in 3:43.91.
The Hoosiers closed the meet with a win by the women's 4X400m relay and the men finished second with a season-best time of 3:09.39. The women's 4X100m relay team set a season-best time of 46.38.
The Hoosiers welcomed back several alumni from the 1970 Big Ten Championship team, celebrating the 45thanniversary of the group.
IU alum and Olympian Derek Drouin competed in the high jump and won with a mark of 2.26m.
