BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana University Women's Soccer player Orianica Velasquez helped her home country of Colombia earn a 1-1 draw against Mexico in their first match of the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 tournament. It marks the second appearance in World Cup competition for Velasquez.
Mexico opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by Veronica Perez. Colombia was able to score its first-ever goal in World Cup play in the 82nd minute to tie the match at 1-1. The match would end in a draw so both teams earned one point with two matches remaining in group play.
Velasquez, in the starting lineup as a defender, sent a long pass from the left side into the center of the field outside the box and the goalkeeper for Mexico came out to challenge the attack and was awarded a yellow card. On the ensuing free kick, the shot was blocked by the Mexico defenders, and eventually cleared away, but only temporarily.
Just a few minutes later, with Colombia still in the attacking third, the ball found the foot of Velasquez and she sent another dangerous ball into the middle of the box. Once again, the keeper for Mexico was not able to get to it but other Mexico defenders were able to clear it out before one of Velasquez teammates could get to it.
Here's a look at the two remaining group play games for Colombia and where you can watch them on TV:
