BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University women's soccer head coach Amy Berbary, who is entering her third season with the Hoosiers, announced the team's 2015 schedule on Thursday.
The slate features seven games against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, with four of those games coming in the non-conference portion of the schedule.
"This schedule is definitely one that will challenge us to be in top form each time we take the pitch," Berbary said. "Our non-conference schedule is one that we are really excited for and will help prepare us in a variety of ways. Then you have the Big Ten which is always one of the best conferences in the country; this year will certainly be no different, so it should provide a number of intriguing matchups for our fans to enjoy."
The Hoosiers return 16 letterwinners from last year's team and also welcome eight newcomers, including Emily Basten, a senior transfer from Central Michigan and Cassidy Blacha, a freshman that graduated a semester early from high school and enrolled at IU for the Spring 2015 semester.
After playing an exhibition game at Louisville on Aug. 16, the Hoosiers will host the Hoosier Classic on Aug. 21 and 23, where they will take on a pair of NCAA teams from 2014 in Virginia Tech and SIU-Edwardsville. The Hokies were 16-6 overall and lost in the third round of the NCAA Tournament while SIUE won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and lost to Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
The following weekend, the Hoosiers will stay in the state of Indiana, but travel north to Purdue to take part in the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. On Friday, Aug. 28, IU will play Missouri from the SEC and then play Baylor from the Big XII on Sunday, Aug. 30. Mizzou is another team that advanced to the national tournament, losing to Washington in the second round while Baylor had an overall record of 9-8-3 in 2014.
The non-conference play continues Sept. 4 and 6 when Indiana will play a pair of schools for the first time in program history. On Friday, the Hoosiers will open the weekend at the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, against Middle Tennessee before taking on LSU on Sunday.
For the final non-conference weekend, IU will travel to South Bend to take on perennial power Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 11. The Fighting Irish were 14-6-2 overall last year and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Then on Sunday, Sept. 13., Ball State will pay a visit to Bill Armstrong Stadium in the team's first meeting since 2007 and just the third all-time meeting.
The start of Big Ten Conference play will bring Illinois (Sept. 18) and Northwestern (Sept. 20) to Bloomington to conclude a three-game homestand. Indiana has won four in a row against Northwestern and two of the last three against the Fighting Illini.
A trip to the northern part of the conference footprint will see IU take on Wisconsin, a 2014 NCAA Tournament participant, on Friday, Sept. 25 before traveling to Minnesota for a Sunday afternoon matinee on Sept. 27. This will be the Hoosiers first trip to Madison, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota since 2011.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, Indiana will host Iowa before heading back on the road for two games the following week at Rutgers (Oct. 8) and Penn State (Oct. 11). Last year was the first meeting between IU and Rutgers, and it was also in Piscataway, N.J. - a game the Hoosiers lost by a narrow 0-1 margin. The game against PSU in University Park, Pennsylvania, will be the third time in the last four year that IU has made the trip to Happy Valley.
After playing four of the previous five games on the road, the Hoosiers will close the season with three of the final four games at home to close the regular season starting with Maryland paying its first-ever visit to Armstrong Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 15. Then on Sunday, Oct. 18, Indiana will host Ohio State for an afternoon game, with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m
Indiana will not play a mid-week game the following week before hitting the road to play at Michigan State on Sunday, Oct. 25. The Hoosiers have won four of the last five meetings in East Lansing and each of the last three meetings overall. The last two games in East Lansing between the two teams have all gone to overtime, with the Hoosiers winning both.
The final game of the regular season will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 28, with the Golden Boot on the line as the Hoosiers host in-state rival Purdue. Indiana has won each of the last three games against the Boilermakers after not posting a win in the 15 meetings prior to that.
A change in the format for the Big Ten Tournament will be introduced this year, as the tournament will take place over two weekends. The quarterfinals will take place on Oct. 31 or Nov. 1 at campus locations determined by the final regular season standings. The four teams that advance will then meet for the semifinals and finals on Nov. 6 and 8 at the home field of the highest seed remaining.
