IU gets goals from Matt Foldesy and Femi Hollinger-Janzen in the victory.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A first-half strike from junior Matt Foldesy set the stage for a 2-1 Indiana victory over the Mexican U-17 National Team in front of a crowd of 3,210 Tuesday night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Hoosiers cap the spring season with a 4-1 record. This is Indiana's third win in the nine-game series with Mexico, and the first victory since 2010.
Fans on both sides barely had time to settle into their seats before Mexico jumped on the scoreboard with a goal in the first minute. Ivan Gutiérez López got behind the IU defense for the score just 41 seconds into the match.
That wake-up call settled the Hoosiers and they began to get chances on goal, including a breakaway attempt from sophomore Tanner Thompson as he tried to chip goalkeeper Joel Raymundo Garcia Chácon, who came up with the save.
IU goalkeeper Colin Webb came up with the save on a shot from José De Jesús Gurrola Castro in the 16th minute, and another shot from Thompson was saved by Chácon in the 23rd minute.
Indiana broke through with the tying goal in the 29th minute when Foldesy received a pass from sophomore Billy McConnell and hit the upper left of the net for a 1-1 game. It was then Foldesy making a key play on the defensive end in the 40th minute when he cleared Joaquín Esquivel Martinez' shot off the line, preserving the tie.
Mexico held a 6-5 shot advantage at the break, with three saves for Chácon and two for Webb.
The first threat of the second half came from Mexico in the 62nd minute as Webb made a diving stop to his right on a shot from Kevin Uriel Magaña Araujo. In the 73rd minute Thompson took a free kick from 30 yards out that was blocked.
The game-winning goal for IU would come in the 79th minute off the foot of Femi Hollinger-Janzen. The play began with Thompson in the midfield, who dished off to Phil Fives making a run up the left side. Fives played a ball into Hollinger-Janzen, who hit his shot off the underside of the cross bar and in for what would be the game-winning score. It was the second goal in as many matches for Hollinger-Janzen.
Freshman Brad Shaw had a shot in the 86th minute that was stopped by Fernando Daniel Hernández Mata, and a shot in the 89th minute from Kyle Sparks also required a diving stop from Mata.
The Hoosiers finished with a 10-8 shot advantage, putting seven of the 10 shots on frame.
