ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference office announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Thursday, with $15,000 awarded to each institution. The two recipients from Indiana University are Rebecca Dreher (women's soccer) and Will Nolden (baseball).
Dreher, a native of Westlake, Ohio, was named Academic All-Big Ten on four occasions and was received Capital One Academic All-District V First Team accolades as a redshirt junior. She played in a total of 71 games over the course of her career, scoring four goals on 25 career shots, including her lone game-winning goal against Xavier. Her efforts on the defensive end helped the Hoosiers post a school-record nine shutouts in 2013 and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where the Hoosiers advanced to the Round of 32.
Nolden has played in 213 games for Indiana, starting 167. Nolden owns a .281 batting average to go with 172 hits, 72 RBI, 108 runs scored and 22 doubles. The Indianapolis native is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and earned Third Team All-Big Ten honors as a junior in 2014. He has also been a part of the Hoosiers run to the College World Series in 2013 as well as back-to-back Big Ten Regular Season and Big Ten Tournament titles.
Twenty-nine student-athletes from the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program were awarded the scholarship, based on primarily academic achievements.
This year's recipients span 15 different sports and will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines, including athletic administration and sport management, audiology, biomedical engineering, business administration, chemistry, communicative sciences and disorders, dentistry, international affairs, law, medicine, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
