Hoosiers Take Down Purdue, Advance in Big Ten Tournament

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 5 seed Indiana men's tennis team defeated No. 12 seed Purdue 4-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament on Thursday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Purdue won the doubles point but the Hoosiers (18-10) came back to win five of six first sets on their way to the match victory.
"We came back from a difficult situation after doubles," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "It came down to who was going to compete harder and our guys did a great job of getting leads and taking control of matches in singles. We had great energy and played like a team today."
Purdue led the match 2-0, until sophomore Stefan Lugonjic and freshman Raheel Manji evened the match 2-0 with 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 victories.
Junior Daniel Bednarczyk put the Hoosiers on top 3-2 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 2 singles position.
With the No. 3 singles match going to a second set tiebreak, sophomore Matthew McCoy clinched the match for the Hoosiers with a 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 singles position.
Up next the Hoosiers advance to the quarterfinals, where they will battle No. 4 seed Northwestern tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. ET. Earlier this season the Wildcats beat the Hoosiers 4-3 in Bloomington.
