BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- After a successful first season of collegiate tennis at Indiana, freshman Raheel Manji has been chosen as one of six athletes to represent Team Canada at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea July 3-14, 2015.
The World University Games are a multi-sport event that takes place every two years in various cities all over the world. It is one of the largest multi-sport events worldwide, second only in size to the Olympic Games. More than 12,200 student-athletes and officials from over 170 countries attend.
"I am happy for Raheel and being selected for this team is a huge honor," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "He earns it everyday and works extremely hard. This is a true testament to his hard work on the tennis court."
The 2015 men's team will feature Manji as well as Alexander Day of Princeton and Roman Trkulja of Penn State University. The 2015 women's squad will consist of Jena Cheng from University of Utah, Louise Kwong of University of Illinois, and Evangeline Repic from University of Tennessee. Canada's tennis team will be accompanied by coaches/managers Scott Hurtubise and Carson Bell.
Manji posted an 18-9 overall record in singles competition, playing at the No. 4 singles position. He tallied a mark of 14-7 in doubles with senior Sven Lalic.
"I am very excited to compete in these games," Manji said. "I know that you can only have two chances at most to play in these games so that makes it that much more special. I'm looking forward to representing Canada and the Indiana Hoosiers as best I can and I think it will be a great experience."
