BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -It will be another six months before the Hoosiers return to the pool for their 2016 campaign, but the anticipation has been on the rise since last season's end. The Hoosiers have announced a couple of promising signings in Kate Pipkin and Kaybree Albright, who will don the crimson caps when they arrive on campus this coming fall. Furthermore, current and former Hoosiers are making their mark on the international stage in various summer tournaments for Team Canada, including the 2015 World University Games and the 2015 Pan-American Games.
During the wait for the first opening sprint of 2016, IUHoosiers.com will revisit the top seven moments of the Hoosiers' outstanding 2015 season. These moments include superlative individual and team performances, compelling matches in the regular season and postseason, storied rivalries, and historic milestones achieved by the 2015 squad.
We'll begin with Indiana's match against Cal State East Bay last February at an invitational in Santa Clara. Though this match was out-of-conference and against an unranked opponent, it was one of the best performances by the Hoosiers in 2015.
ONE TO REMEMBER: INDIANA 16, CAL STATE EAST BAY 0
Shutouts are a feat in modern water polo, irrespective of the opponent. The game is fast-paced and the talent pool is growing, leading to more field players capable of putting shots on goal. In IU Water Polo history, from the inaugural season in 1998 to 2009, the Hoosiers had tallied nine shutout wins. The program didn't record another shutout for five seasons, despite those years being among the best in the history of the program. It takes a special performance from all seven players in the pool to execute such a feat, and Indiana's 16-0 win over the Pioneers didn't deviate from this standard.
The match boasted top performances from several of Indiana's players, with five players scoring multiple goals and five players serving more than one assist. Breakout freshman Kelly Matthews led IU on the score sheet with four goals, one of her 14 matches with a hat trick or better in 2015. Other Hoosiers with multiple goals included Rebecca Gerrity, Alexis Jones, Sarah Myers, and Shelby Taylor, each converting two scores. Summer Creighton, Colleen McNaught, Candyce Schroeder, and Sarah Young all cracked the scoreboard with one goal apiece.
While one IU freshman led the team in scoring, another led in the assists category. Sarah Myers tossed a trio of assists in the match, a single-game best in her first season. Creighton, Schroeder, Jones, and McNaught posted two assists each, followed by Gerrity, Young, and Jennifer Beadle each with one assist. Due to a well-balanced, highly efficient attack, the Hoosiers managed to convert 16 of their 31 shot attempts for scores.
Even though it takes a high-caliber offense to win in water polo, a strong defense will ultimately decide if a team can achieve a shutout victory. In this match against CSU East Bay, the Hoosier defense achieved their standard of excellence through pressure in the field and clinical goaltending from both of Indiana's keepers, Mary Campbell and MacKenzie Bonk. Campbell and Bonk split time in the cage, and both keepers performed their duties to near perfection. The two combined for 12 saves on 17 shot attempts and, above all else, refused to allow a goal for the full 32 minutes of play.
In the field, the Hoosiers combined for 13 steals, led by Alexis Jones with four and Summer Creighton with three. In addition, Indiana totaled six field blocks as a team, and served just one ejection.
A match like this will not go down as one of the greatest in school history, nor will it be remembered as one of the most compelling in the 2015 season. This match, however, will not go unrecognized by head coach Barry King and the members of last season's team. It was a result that resembled a perfect game plan, one that coaches and players strive to achieve each time they take the water.
The second installment of IU Water Polo's Memorable Moments of 2015 will continue next Thursday with an acknowledgement of Indiana's match against Gannon University, also known as head coach Barry King's 400th win at Indiana.
