BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the 2014-15 academic year complete, we sat down with rising junior forwardCollin Hartman to get his thoughts on his sophomore season and what he's working on for next year.
On what his role might be next season:
Hartman: "I've talked to coach a lot about that. He says I just need to do things that impact winning with my defense and not just relying on my shot to get me going. Stuff like that. I need to do the little things that I did to impact winning in the preseason last year. I know I can impact winning with getting rebounds and being the leader and helping our guys along and help them learn faster. My role is bringing energy, playing defense, rebounding and taking my shot when my time comes, so I have focus on not getting out of the realm of what I'm supposed to be doing."
What is the biggest thing that you'll take away from last season individually?
Hartman: "Just being consistent. Having the same mindset every day knowing that it is possible. It's a long season and everybody knows that, but you can't look at it that way. You've got to take advantage of the few years that you have. It's crazy to think I'm already going to be a junior. Time really does fly. It may not look like that when you're in the moment, but when you look back at it, everything's flying by you. I've just got to stay focused and bring the energy and bring the intensity every single day next year."
What advice would you give the freshmen coming into the program over the summer:
Hartman: "We have the same mindset every day. Coaches do too. They push us every day. There's no days off really. There isn't a `day off.' We know we have to get in the gym and do stuff on our own. That's just the culture we provide here. It's 24 hour service. People are on call all the time to come in here and work with you one-on-one, play one-on-one or do whatever you need to do to put up shots or get your ball handling right. We show them that's how it is right from the start so when they are in our shoes in a year or two, they can pass it down. We just got to keep passing that down because it works, clearly."
