BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Volleyball team was honored at the Spirit of Indiana Showcase Show with the 24 Sports, 1 Team Program of Excellence Award.
The award is a culmination of the entire year and goes to a team with strong commitment to service, leadership, education and sportsmanship.
"I'm really proud of them," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "They put in a lot of effort this entire year to represent Indiana and support their fellow student-athletes. They have invested a lot of time in giving back to our community, which is something they really enjoy doing."
Part of the Program of Excellence Challenge Award is supporting fellow student-athletes at their events and engaging in the community. In addition to the recognition at the Spirit of Indiana Showcase, the team was invited to a special dinner with Director of Athletics Fred Glass.
Members of the team helped out this year at the Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc., Animal Shelter, Meadowood Retirement Community, Animal Shelter and Pinnacle School.
"We work hard to get involved in the community," junior Courtney Harnish said. "I personally work with kids at the Boys and Girls Club and I love it."
"It is very rewarding, because we love what we do in the community," junior Kyndall Merritt added. "It is an honor to represent Indiana University and the athletic department and as part of the Bloomington community."
