Canada was first on the scoreboard at the 6:03 mark in the first period, and proceeded to hold the lead wire to wire. Canada held an 8-3 lead at half time, and then poured on a 5-0 third quarter to seal the victory. Gaudreault amassed a commanding 13-save performance in the cage, bringing her total to 23 saves over two matches played. Fournier served her third and fourth assists of the tournament while also converting four steals.
In earlier group stage action, the Canadians rallied for a draw against Brazil and won in convincing fashion over Venezuela. Fournier's scored one goal and tossed an assist for the Canadians, all while playing clutch defense on the other end with two field blocks. Gaudreault made 10 saves in the match to help save a point against the Brazilian squad.
In Canada's 15-4 win against Venezuela, Köhli scored her first goal of the tournament, which came on a counter-attack in the final period of the match. Fournier served one assist and forced one steal in the victory.
The win over Puerto Rico lifts team Canada to the top of the Group B table, but securing that first spot is out of their control. Brazil has yet to play their final group stage match, against Puerto Rico on Saturday, July 11. If Brazil wins, they will top Group B and earn the top seed out of their group for the semifinal. With a draw or loss by the Brazilians, Canada would emerge as the top seed.
Both Brazil and Canada earned medals at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara. The United States took gold, followed by Canada with the silver medal and Brazil earning bronze. Canada has won medals in every water polo event (men's and women's) since the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg.
