The Canada women's water polo squad won Saturday's World University Games semifinal match over Italy, 7-5. With the win, Indiana Hoosiers Kelly Matthews and Sarah Myers will advance to the gold medal match in their first international tournament with Team Canada.
The match began with both defenses playing at maximum capacity. The first goal of the match didn't occur until the 1:37 mark of the first period, a goal by Italy's Roberta Grillo. Canada played shrewd defense in the first period, but couldn't equalize before the end of the quarter.
Canada was first on the board in the second quarter, followed by another goal from Italy to make it 2-1. The Canadians surged ahead with a 3-1 scoring run to close the quarter, including a goal by Canada's Kelly McKee (California-Berkeley) at the buzzer. At half time, Canada held a narrow 4-3 lead in a compelling semifinal match.
Italy's Carla Carrega leveled the match to start the third off of a power play. Following Italy's equalizer, Indiana sophomore Kelly Matthews found Canadian teammate Kindred Paul (California-Berkeley) for a quick go-ahead goal. Both sides traded goals to close the quarter, and Canada maintained their one-goal lead heading into the final period.
With the lead in their favor, Canada locked down on the defensive end and held the Italians to a scoreless fourth quarter. Canada's lone goal of the quarter came from Axelle Crevier, with the assist credited to Paul. That goal sealed the score line at 7-5, lifting Canada into the gold medal match.
Matthews and Myers combined for 32 minutes in the pool in Canada's semifinal match. Matthews finished the match with one assist and two field blocks.
Canada will face Australia in the gold medal match of the 2015 World University Games on Monday, July 13 at 7:00 am ET (8:00 pm local time). The Australians are unbeaten through this tournament, opening with a 7-7 draw against the United States and following with five wins.
