BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana RHP Jake Kelzer has decided to return to the Hoosiers for his junior season in 2016 after being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round (413th overall) of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Kelzer, IU's highest draft choice this year, was also drafted in 2014 by the New York Yankees in the 22nd round but elected to return to Indiana.
The Bloomington, Ind., native, led the Hoosiers with 73.0 innings pitched and was second with 11 starts on a team that made its third consecutive NCAA Regional apperance in 2015.
Kelzer's 57 strikeouts were the second most for IU in 2015, while his opposing batting average (.237) ranked 10th in the Big Ten. After arriving on campus in 2013 to compete in swimming and diving, Kelzer -- who enters 2016 as a junior -- has pitched 104.2 innings the last two years, recording a 3.70 ERA in 42 appearances and 11 starts. His 2.54 earned run average in Big Ten games only currently ranks fifth all-time at Indiana.
Scott Effross and Christian Morris, who were also drafted with eligibility remaining, opted to begin professional careers with the Cubs and Yankees, respectively.

It was an absolute honor being drafted by the Cubs this year. However, I can't wait to suit up for the 2016 season with the Hoosiers #IUBASE
