Fournier, Gaudreault, and Köhli go for gold after Sunday's 14-7 win against Cuba
The Canadian Women's National Team advanced to the gold medal match with Sunday's 14-7 win over Cuba in the semifinals of the 2015 Pan-American Games. Former Hoosiers Shae Fournier, Jessica Gaudreault, and Jakie Köhli have played a major role in the host nation's success heading into the tournament's final match on Tuesday evening.
Canada took the lead in the first minute of the match and held it until the final whistle. Christine Robinson scored the first two goals for the Canadians, followed by a goal from Cuba on the power play. Canada drew a five-meter penalty shot at the close of the first period, which Emma Wright coolly delivered into the back of the cage.
The second quarter began with two Canadian scores, goals from Stephanie Valin and former IU Water Polo All-American Shae Fournier. Fournier's goal came on the counter-attack via an assist from Christine Robinson to give Canada a 5-1 lead midway through the second. Cuba answered with a goal from Adriana Garlobo, but Canada responded with three consecutive goals to close the half. Team Canada held a convincing 8-2 lead over Cuba at the break.
Canada was first on the board in the third quarter as well. Former ACWPC All-American Jakie Köhli found Emma Wright, who sent home Canada's ninth goal of the match. Canada scored another before Cuba netted three consecutive scores to end the third quarter at 10-5.
Canada's Monika Eggens opened scoring in the fourth, followed shortly by Köhli on the power play for a 12-5 lead. Cuba and Canada split four goals down the stretch, but Canada's deficit was too great for a comeback win by the Cubans. The match ended 14-7 in favor of Canada, who advanced to the gold medal match.
TONIGHT: USA vs CANADA
With their win in the semifinals, the Canadians will take part in the most anticipated match of the tournament—the gold medal match against the world #1 United States squad. The last time these teams met was in the semifinals of the FINA Women's Intercontinental Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, in May. The Americans edged Canada 11-9, advancing to and winning the gold medal match. Canada won the bronze medal with a 9-7 win over China.
Tonight's match begins at 8:00 pm ET at the Markham Pan Am / Parapan Am Centre. Canada is seeking their first gold medal since the 1999 Winnipeg games.
