BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday that Indiana junior running back Jordan Howard is a preseason candidate for the 2015 Doak Walker Award. The award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. Former Hoosiers and current Atlanta Falcons running back Tevin Coleman was a finalist for the award last season.
Howard joined IU prior to the 2015 spring semester after two years at UAB. Since the start of 2013, he ranks second nationally among active running backs with 451 attempts and 107.3 rushing yards per game, fifth with 2,468 rushing yards and 114.0 yards from scrimmage per game, and seventh with 2,623 yards from scrimmage. He has averaged 5.5 yards per rush and scored 17 total TDs (15 rushing and two receiving).
The Gardendale, Ala., native earned first team All-Conference USA honors in 2014. Howard rushed for a UAB single-season record 1,587 yards on 306 carries (5.2 average) with 13 touchdowns. He ranked seventh nationally with 132.3 rushing yards per game, 14th in rushing yards, 16th with 138.3 yards from scrimmage per game, 24th with 138.3 all-purpose yards per game, 25th with 1,659 yards from scrimmage, tied for 26th in rushing scores and tied for 30th with 14 total touchdowns.
Howard collected eight 100-yard games, including four straight to end the season, and five 150-yarders, with a career-high 262 yards in the win at Southern Miss. He recorded five games with 30-plus attempts, including a career-high 39 vs. Marshall
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists on November 18, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the three finalists, who will be announced on November 24. The committee will cast a second vote beginning November 30 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2015 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 10, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas in early 2016.
The award, which will name its 26th recipient in 2015, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
