BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Over 120 student-athletes brought smiles to the faces of kids at Camp Riley, the annual summer camp program that lets children with physical disabilities experience life without limits.
Every summer, Camp Riley welcomes more than 215 children between the ages of 8 and 18 from throughout Indiana and several other states. IU student-athletes have been coming to Camp Riley for several years and always have an enjoyable experience and a positive impact on the kids.
The student-athletes first met and signed t-shirts for the kids, before engaging in activities from wheelchair basketball to volleyball. There was dancing, archery, human bowling and more.
Sophomore Jess Walter and her women's basketball teammates started playing adapted volleyball and although they encountered some rain she said it was a lot of fun.
"I love coming to Camp Riley," Walter said. "It is always so much fun and the kids are true inspirations. We were playing volleyball and it started raining and it was so much fun and everyone was loving it."
"My favorite part was talking and interacting with the kids," women's soccer senior Rachel Romero said. "They are really fun and they have a lot to say. They have such a great attitude and they made it fun for us."
After the campers took turns being pushed through on a sled to knock down bowling pins, they let freshman football player Jack Trainer take a turn.
"I got a real feel for Camp Riley and the kids," Trainer said. "They are in great spirits and it's awesome to see the obstacles they have overcome, through their athletic skills and the friendships they have made."
