Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze is currently serving as head coach for Team USA at the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea. Below is an update from Coach Looze on his first days at the World University Games.
July 9, 2015
With two days to go, the U.S. Swimming team stands at 22 overall medals with 10 gold. The best U.S. showing ever, came in 2007 when that team won 27 overall medals with 10 gold. The goal in tonight's final is to surpass the gold total and draw as close to the total medal count as is possible with one day remaining in pool competition. One Hoosier in action tonight is Lilly King in the 50 breaststroke semifinal. Earlier in the day Lindsay Vrooman qualifies for the final in the 800 free which will be swum Friday night. Anze Tavcar had a very fine 100 free in prelims. Two nights ago, Dr. Larry Rink (IU men's basketball team physician) was the honorary medal presenter for the awards ceremony at the aquatic center making all Hoosiers feel very much at home here in Korea!

After being in Korea for almost a week now, the U.S. team and staff are humbled by the kindness of the Korean people. Despite working over 12 hour shifts in the athlete village, volunteers have a warm smile on their faces every time we see them. Our swimmers can learn greatly from this attitude. In fact, as a result of the Korean War, where more than 30,000 Americans gave their lives, U.S. athletes are very popular with the locals. In the pool, we are having a great time. Thus far, we have won four golds and two bronze with more opportunities to come this evening. Good luck to Hoosiers, Lindsay Vrooman and Lilly King as they go for medals in finals tonight!

Greetings from Gwangju, South Korea. The U.S. Swimming team arrived June 30th into the athlete village. I have run into several Hoosiers over the past few days. Justine Ress (France) and Anze Tavcar (Slovenia) to mention a few. Our two U.S. team members, Lindsay Vrooman and Lilly King, look great in their individual practices thus far. On July 3rd, we had the afternoon off due to opening ceremonies. Several members of the U.S. coaching staff visited an ancient Buddhist temple (Jeungsim-sa) located on Mudeungsan mountain. The temple has functioned for more than 1000 years, surviving several foreign invasions. Today was the 4th of July and team USA had a great first day of prelims. Justine Ress got the Hoosiers started with a very fine 200 back. Tomorrow Lilly and Lindsay get the American Hoosiers going here at WUGS.
Go USA and Go Hoosiers!
