Indiana's top road performance of the 2015 season came against the top San Diego squads on their home water
During the wait for the opening sprint of 2016, IUHoosiers.com will revisit the top moments of the Hoosiers' outstanding 2015 season. These moments include superlative individual and team performances, compelling matches in the regular season and postseason, storied rivalries, and historic milestones achieved by the 2015 squad.
This week's installment returns to the Aztec Invitational, Indiana's first trip away from home after hosting the Fluid Five. The Hoosiers opened Saturday with a convincing win over the Whittier College Poets, followed by a loss to Pacific. Sunday's pair of matches came against the toughest competition of the weekend—the No. 12 San Diego State Aztecs, the host of the tournament; and No. 20 UC San Diego, a team the Hoosiers faced in the 2014 NCAA Championships. The Hoosiers won both matches on Sunday in resounding fashion, and the wins became their most impressive non-conference away matches of the 2015 season.
Indiana's first match on Sunday pitted the Hoosiers against the No. 12 Aztecs, the highest-ranked opponent in the weekend schedule. This match could have gotten out of control for the Hoosiers if they didn't assert their style of play, which is why they shot out of a cannon to start the first quarter. Indiana scored three unanswered goals from Colleen McNaught, Summer Creighton, and Candyce Schroeder, while relinquishing nothing on defense to hold a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. Indiana allowed two goals in the second, but maintained their lead with two goals by Kelly Matthews on the counter to hold a 5-2 halftime lead.
The Aztecs charged into the match in the second half, scoring three consecutive goals to drop Indiana's lead to one score. The Hoosiers pushed further ahead with two goals from Shelby Taylor, but the Aztecs sought to make a game of it in the fourth with the Indiana leading 7-4. Both sides swarmed on the attack in the final period, splitting six total goals in the final eight minutes. Goals from Rebecca Gerrity and Schroeder pushed Indiana's lead to five goals, but the Aztecs came back with another goal. Creighton's second goal of the match gave the Hoosiers a 10-5 lead, one they would hold thanks to a heroic performance by Indiana keeper Mary Campbell. The Aztecs slotted two more goals into the cage, but Campbell's five saves in the final period kept San Diego State at bay.
Following their emotional win over the Aztecs, the Hoosiers took the pool to take on the UC San Diego Tritons. Indiana held the lead for most of the game, vaulting to a 4-2 advantage in the first and maintaining a 6-4 lead through halftime. The Tritons responded with three unanswered goals in the third to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the final quarter.
UC San Diego took their first lead of the game off of a power play early in the fourth quarter. But Indiana had an answer. McNaught found Schroeder in space, and Schroeder sent the tying goal into the back of the cage with five minutes remaining in regulation. The two sides fired every chance and half chance at the goalmouth, but both defenses held strong until the end of regulation. This game would be settled in overtime.
The Tritons had their first chance of overtime late in the first period, but Campbell rose to the occasion and made a crucial save. Summer Creighton took the next possession down the pool and found Gerrity, who broke free and sent her shot into the back of the cage. Indiana held a 9-8 lead at the end of the first overtime period.
Since Indiana had the lead, they were content with playing tight defense and controlling possession for most of the second overtime period. UC San Diego was able to break away on the attack, but Campbell made another great save that may have clinched the game. The Hoosier defense thwarted another Triton power play and took the ensuing counter down the pool for McNaught's third goal of the game. With just 30 seconds remaining, UC San Diego did all they could to force sudden death, but fell short due to yet another big save by Campbell. Indiana took the game in overtime, 10-8.
