BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Earlier this summer, we caught up with sophomore Emmitt Holt to find out how being around the team for an entire summer session has helped his progression on the court, in the weight room and in the classroom. Continue reading to find out what Holt had to say...
On what it's been like to be with the team for a full summer…
"It's definitely good for me to be here this summer considering that I wasn't here at all last summer. It's a great experience, I feel like we come together as a team and we're getting better everyday."
On the advantages of using the sandpit to train…
"I think we're using a part of our body that we haven't been able to unlock before. He emphasizes the hip and how that can make you faster, be more explosive and whatnot. Just unlocking parts of our body that we really haven't been using before and using that to our advantage."
On using elevation masks during summer workouts…
"I can tell you one thing, they definitely work. It makes it tougher to breathe."
On if it would have helped to be able to participate in summer workouts last season…
"I feel like it would have helped a lot, to be honest. Even this summer, I gained like 10 pounds of muscle just being here, so I feel like it would have helped me out a lot. But, had to work with what we had."
On what the 10 pounds of muscle mean for Holt and what his weight is…
"Just growing as a player, growing as a student here. My weight is 230."
On a typical week for them in the summer…
"Well we definitely lift everyday, we have hot yoga sometimes."
On hot yoga…
"It's good for us and takes breaks on our bodies. It gets us rejuvenated for whatever is to come for the rest of the week. It gets us stretched out so we can be more nimble.
On if they've ever done yoga before this summer…
"No. But it's a good experience, a really good experience. I like it a lot."
On other differences of things they're working on…
"I'm definitely trying to develop my shot now, especially beyond the arc. I'm trying to improve my ball handling, including my left hand, so that I can drive more often and kick. Those are my main focuses right now."
On the team's keys when playing this summer…
"The main focus is communicating with each other, because that's what will get us through the game. Other than that, we're getting out and running, because we're a running team."
On how open gym this year compares to last…
"It's definitely more competitive than last fall. The work ethic is definitely present. The freshmen are still learning, but they're feeding off of the upperclassmen. The upperclassmen are always in the gym, getting in extra work. They know that champions are made in the offseason."
