BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Head volleyball coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan has announced the addition of Omar Sanchez to her coaching staff. Sanchez will serve as a volunteer coach for the Hoosiers and will help with scouting reports, IU Volleyball camps and assist with practice plans throughout the year.
"Omar has been a fabulous addition, even in the short amount of time he's been with us," Dunbar-Kruzan said. "I knew the first time I spoke to him on the phone that I liked him. After meeting him in person and seeing the passion he has not only for the sport, but also for teaching, I know he was the right fit for us. I love that he has competed at an extremely high level and that he already has years of coaching experience under his belt. This was a win-win for both of us and we're happy he's a Hoosier."
Sanchez played at Lewis University from 2009-12 and was part of a team that advanced to the 2012 NCAA National Semifinals in men's volleyball. His team won the conference tournament and regular season championships that year as well.
Most recently Sanchez has served as assistant coach for men's volleyball at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa from 2013-15. His primary role has been to ensure opponent and team film is broken down for players and staff. He also assisted with daily practice plans and game schemes.
"I'm excited to be here and begin my journey with the Indiana volleyball program," Sanchez said. "I'm eager and ready to make an impact right away with the group and help them reach new heights."
In his two seasons at Grand View the team posted a 48-12 mark and were back-to-back National Championships Semifinalists. Sanchez coached a three-time All-American middle blocker, two-time All-American and Player of the Year outside hitter and worked under head coach Donan Cruz, the 2014 and 2015 AVCA National Coach of the Year.
Sanchez has also served as the head coach of the Ultimate Volleyball Club team in Frankfort, Ill., from 2007-present, for boy's 16's-18's. He has also coached various age groups with girls teams as a training coach and given private lessons to hone volleyball skills.
Sanchez has one sister, Bianca, who played volleyball at the University of Illinois Springfield and is current attending for M.B.A. His parents are Tony and Lucy Sanchez, who instilled the passion, love and drive that he has for the sport as both have been coaching for over 20 years.
"I feel blessed and am very thankful for this opportunity to work with such a wonderful coaching staff," Sanchez said. "The staff is passionate, dedicated and driven to be successful and I share that with them."
