BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men's soccer team opened the 2015 regular season with a 1-0 win over St. John's as part of the Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Friday night. The lone goal of the game came off the foot of junior Phil Fives in the 33rd minute to put IU in front and junior goalkeeper Colin Webb made it hold up for the win.
The Indiana goal started in the back when sophomore defender Grant Lillard sent a long pass up the left center of the field to fifth-year senior Ben Maurey. It was there that Maurey played the pass off his chest to a streaking Fives, who took two touches and smashed a shot past the St. John's goalkeeper for his first goal in the Cream and Crimson.
The assist for Lillard is the second of his career while Maurey earns his first point as a Hoosier after transferring to IU from Brown University this summer.
The Hoosiers finished the match with a 14-6 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Webb made two saves in goal and had another shot by St. John's cleared off the line in the second half by freshman Jeremiah Gutjahr.
Beishuizen: New Players Leave Their Mark In Win
In the first half, the IU dominated the run of play and were rewarded with a penalty kick opportunity in the 11th minute. It was freshman Andrew Gutman that slid into the area and won a ball cleanly before being taken out as he advanced towards the goal, earning the PK for IU. However, Femi Hollinger-Janzen stepped up to take the kick and his shot missed wide so the game remained scoreless for the time being.
Over the next 20 minutes of action, Indiana would draw three more corner kicks but were not able to cash in on them. But then Lillard controlled a clearance by the Red Storm and set in motion the goal that would prove to be the game-winner.
The Red Storm would get two more shots off towards the end of the half, but neither were all that threatening and IU took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Indiana registered five shots in the first 13 minutes of the half. Then St. John's found some room in the final third to get a strong shot off from the top of the box but it trickled wide of the goal.
Maurey nearly added a goal to his first game in the Cream and Crimson in the 70th minute, when he ran onto a loose ball just inside the left side of the box. He took a touch and unleashed a shot on goal that forced the St. John's keeper to his knees to dive on it and deflect it over the end line.
Indiana will return to action on Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium when they host No. 4 Notre Dame at 2:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. The first 750 fans will receive a free Hoosier Army bandana.
