Rother records six saves in Indiana's first loss of the 2015 season
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers concluded their opening weekend of the 2015 season with a non-conference matchup against Louisville, the No. 12 team in the country. The Cardinals strung together a few successful attacks in an otherwise level contest, scoring all three of their goals in a 16-minute span and holding the score line to 3-0 at the final whistle.
Junior Kate Barber led the Hoosiers on the attack with three shots on target, followed by Maddie Latino with two shot attempts. Freshman keeper Noëlle Rother recorded six saves in a strong defensive effort, holding the Cardinals scoreless in the second half.
Despite the losing result, the Hoosiers took away some encouraging notes from their performance. Most notably, according to head coach Amanda Janney, was the versatility of several players.
"We had a lot of players step up due to some injuries sustained earlier in the season," Janney said. "We put several players at multiple positions in today's game, and they gained valuable experience at different spots on the field."
Janney keyed on several players that succeeded in this trial period, including Claire Woods, Kate Barber and Mollie Getzfread. "Claire switched to right midfield, Mollie played in three different positions today, and Kate was all over the field," Janney continued. "It's a testament to the 'total field hockey' we embrace at Indiana, and our depth and experience will play a big part in our success for the rest of the season."
Indiana began the contest with pace, springing on the attack in the early stages. Latino managed a pair of shot attempts in the first six minutes, only to be parried away by the Louisville defense.
Louisville broke the tie with their first goal in the 14th minute of play on a long-range connection. The Cardinals doubled their tally five minutes later from a penalty corner. Just before half time, the 12th-ranked team netted their third and final score of the game.
Holding a three-score lead, the Cardinals proceeded to lock down on the defensive side. Neither team managed to slip a shot past the keepers for the final 40 minutes of play.
Indiana will hit the road again next weekend, this time playing a three-game stint against some of the best squads in the state of California. The Hoosiers will open the weekend on Friday, September 4 at 3:00 p.m. PT against Stanford University. Following that, the Hoosiers will take on Pacific and California-Berkeley before returning home for their first home games of the season.
