Tanner Thompson, from Loomis, California, was a 2014 semifinalist for the award
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana junior midfielder Tanner Thompson was one of 30 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer players named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, the Missouri Athletic Club and the NSCAA announced on Wednesday.
He is the first Hoosier to be named to the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List since Eriq Zavaleta in 2012.
Thompson, a native of Loomis, California, was a semifinalist for the award last year, was a NSCAA All-American and also earned First Team All-Big Ten and First Team All-Midwest Region honors. He led Indiana in goals scored (six) and points (15), and scored the game-winning goal in the Hoosiers 2-1 win over Ohio State in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at the trophy presentation banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
The lists are compiled by the NSCAA Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees, based on analysis of returning All-America and All-Region players, as well as any prominent newcomers. The complete 2015 watch list is at the bottom of this page.
Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches whose programs are current NSCAA College Services members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 players. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, by voting for their favorite semifinalist in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy website, managed by LockerDome.
Indiana, ranked No. 14 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll released earlier this week, will take on St. John's in the regular season opener on Aug. 28 at 8 p.m. in Bill Armstrong Stadium. The game is part of the annual adidas Classic, with No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 13 Maryland joining IU and St. John's.
