SAN ANTONIO – Day two of the USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships saw the 200 free as the showcase event for the Indiana contingent on both the men's and women's side.
On the men's side of the 200 free, Zane Grothe – a graduate and All-American at Auburn who now trains with Indiana – finished second in the A final with a time of 1:47.11. He was followed in third place by sophomore Blake Pieroni and his time of 1:47.30, a time that set a new IU long course record by 1.55 seconds.
Pieroni had qualified for the final second overall with his time of 1:48.10 in the prelims while Grothe finished ninth in the prelims but was able to get a spot in the A final after a qualifier ahead of him did not choose to swim the final.
For the women's 200 free, senior Haley Lips advanced to the A final with her time of 2:00.08 in the prelims, which was good for sixth. Then in the final, she went under the two minute barrier with a 1:59.79 to place eighth. That time in the finals is tied with Kennedy Goss for the fourth-fastest in the IU long course record book and just the third IU swimmer to ever break the 2:00 barrier in the 200-meter free event.
In the B final of the 200 free, it was recent IU graduate Lindsay Vrooman touching the wall in fourth place with a time of 2:00.63.
"At Indiana, we believe that the 200 free is the most important event in swimming," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "And with the 2-3 finish by Zane (Grothe) and Black (Pieroni), we really put that out there at the national championships. And with Haley Lips breaking two minutes in the 200 free as well, we were one of the few programs here that had as many swimmers rank so highly. All of this bodes very well for our program with the Olympic Games less than a year away."
The next best time by an IU swimmer in the 200 free came from Mike Hurly, who posted his time of 1:52.03 but came up short of moving on to the finals. Max Irwin also competed in the prelims of the 200 free and registered a time of 1:53.04 and Jackson Miller was just behind him with his time of 1:53.49.
Irwin was the lone IU representative in the 200 fly and his time of 2:03.96 was not enough to advance him on to the finals.
The 100 back was the other event that had a number of cream and crimson athletes in the pool. The top performance in the event was by graduate James Wells and his 55.75 time. Ryan Gordon was next with a time of 57.08 and Bob Glover just behind him with a time of 57.11. Joseph Lane, a transfer to IU from Navy, registered a time of 57.52 in his prelim heat as well.
A pair of Hoosiers took to the pool on the women's side of the 100 back, as Marie Chamberlain (1:03.81) and Cynthia Pammett (1:04.20) fell just short of moving on to the evening finals.
The USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships continue through Aug. 10 in San Antonio. Complete results can be found at USASwimming.org.
