ROSEMONT, Ill. – Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
This is the second time in Stone's career that she has received this accolade. The Evansville, Ind. native was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1, 2012. Additionally, she was twice named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in 2012.
"It is so exciting to see the benefits of such hard work put in by a player in training correlate to the field," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary.
The award comes on the heels of a weekend that saw the redshirt senior post two shutouts in wins against Missouri and Baylor, bringing her season shutout total to three. In addition, Stone and the rest of the Indiana defense have not allowed a goal in 367 minutes of action, the most since a 2006 Indiana team strung together 404 scoreless minutes.
"She may be one of the most humble players I have ever coached," said Berbary. "If she could, I bet she would give this award to her entire back line for their performance over the weekend. "
Stone recorded 10 saves during the weekend, including a season-high six against Missouri on Friday.
The Hoosiers are back in action on Friday as they face Middle Tennessee State in Baton Rouge, La. as part of the Stomp in the Swamp Tournament hosted by LSU.
