BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld is one of 30 candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate football. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
This is the sixth accolade Sudfeld has collected in 2015. The Modesto, Calif., native is on the watch lists for the Maxwell Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Wuerffel Trophy. He is also a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® and the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award.
Sudfeld, a player speaker at the 2015 Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon, went on a week-long service trip to Uganda during 2015 spring break. He traveled there with his family to visit construction on an orphanage representing Assist International, the humanitarian group that his grandparents founded in 1990. Sudfeld has also volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club, the Andrew Luck/IU Health Change The Play Program and Read Across America.
In the season-opening win over Southern Illinois, Sudfeld threw for 349 yards, the second-highest total of his career, on 19-of-32 passing, with a 57-yard touchdown. He added a career-high 46 rushing yards, including a career-long 21-yarder, for 395 total yards, just three shy of his career-high set against Navy on Sept. 7, 2013.
Sudfeld is second in completion percentage (60.5) and 300-yard games (5), tied for fourth in passing touchdowns (35), seventh in passing yardage (4,655) and completions (365), eighth in total offense (4,772) and ninth in attempts (603) on IU's career lists in just 26 career games (15 starts).
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Of the 30 candidates, 14 have grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher with five of those holding above a 3.5. Three are returning All-Americans, and 18 were all-conference selections in 2014.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January.
