MADISON, Wisconsin – A day after taking a tough loss to Colorado at the East-West Match Play Challenge at University Ridge in Wisconsin, the Indiana women's golf team picked up a 4-1 victory over Michigan to earn third place at the event.
Over the two days of match play, each of the six Indiana golfers competing recorded at least one win, led by Ana Sanjuan and Theresa-Ann Jedra.
The first match of the day was IU freshman Erin Harper against Michigan's Elodie Van Dievoet. After Van Dievoet won the second hole, she held the 1-up lead until Harper won the fifth hole. Van Dievoet would retake the lead on the seventh hole, only to see Haper square the match once again on the ninth hole. Harper would take her first lead of the day on the 10th hole with a par to go 1-up, but Van Dievoet won the 11th hole to even the match. From there, the players would match scores the next eight holes before Harper grabbed the win on the 19th hole.
Match number two saw Indiana sophomore Pear Siriko pull away on the back nine for the 4&2 win over Emily White from Michigan. The two went back and forth early on the front nine, but with the match all square heading to the 12th hole, Siriko played the next five holes in 2-under par, including a birdie on the 16th hole to close out the match.
Eva Domingo, a freshman for the Hoosiers, followed Siriko's lead and was able to pull away down the stretch to post the 3&1 victory over Grace Choi. Unlike Siriko, Domingo had to come from behind as Choi was ahead by a 2-up margin after the fifth hole, But by the time the pair had finished playing the 10th hole, Domingo had squared the match. A Domingo birdie on hole no. 13 gave her confidence and she would go on to win holes 13, 15 and 16 clinch the match.
Junior Ana Sanjuan used key putts for par on 17 and 18 to hang on to her slim 1-up lead and make it stand up for the win over Catherine Peters. Sanjuan and Peters were all square going to the sixth hole before Sanjuan rattled off a birdie-par-par combination over the next three holes and took a 3-up lead. Peters would cut the IU lead to 1-up after the 16th hole but Sanjuan was up to the task on the greens on the last two holes and got the win.
The final match saw Megan Kim from Michigan defeat Camille Chevalier by a 4&3 score. Chevalier took a 2-up lead after the first two holes, but saw that lead cut back to all square at the turn. Then on the back nine, Kim won three straight holes – 13, 14 and 15 – to put the match out of reach.
In the individual consolation bracket, IU's Theresa-Ann Jedra defeated Maria Alzueta Garcia from Michigan by a 5&4 score to earn fifth place. Jedra held the upper hand throughout the match and really put the pressure on in the middle of the round, winning five straight holes to go 5-up with seven holes remaining.
Indiana will return to competition on Oct. 19-20 at the Cardinal Cup, hosted by the University of Louisville at the University of Louisville Golf Course.
